Revital Hollander: "When Robots Write Songs"

Can computers compose beautiful emotional music or in the style of the greats? Can a sonification of a mathematical algorithm, text or a painting sound like music that people would love to hear? How expressive can be a musical instrument that is based on a mathematical sound engine and has a touchscreen interface?

Computer music is the application of computing technology in music composition where either human composers create music with the aid of a computer or computers compose music independently. It includes the theory and application of new and existing computer software technologies and basic aspects of music, such as sound synthesis, digital signal processing, sound design, acoustics, and psychoacoustics.

In the lecture, I will give an overview on recent trends in music technology and computer music, and demonstrate music composition programs and software-based instruments.
